The Opportunity
Set within the rolling terrain of the Old Hickory region, the site offered a rare combination of natural beauty and high visibility, positioned along a busy Tennessee highway. This dual condition opened the door to a home that could feel welcoming while still protecting moments of privacy—supporting multi‑generational living with indoor–outdoor connections and strong orientation potential. The opportunity was to design a residence that meets present needs yet intuitively adapts as life evolves.
The Solution
The design organizes the home into two gabled volumes joined by a central hall, establishing clarity, flow, and purposeful separation of program. The footprint is deliberately shaped to create a sense of arrival from the highway side while carving out intimate outdoor rooms shielded from view. The main level accommodates all daily living so the home can function as single‑story when needed, while upper‑level suites flex for children, guests, or future stages of life. Drawing from the familiar farmhouse vernacular, the architecture refines it through restraint—simple forms, calibrated glazing, long porches, and durable materials that feel both contemporary and rooted.
The Impact
Old Hickory emerges as a home that feels deeply grounded yet quietly modern. Its proportions, porches, and warm material palette cultivate an immediate sense of welcome, while screened outdoor areas and flexible interior suites support family rhythms across seasons and generations. The result is a residence intentionally shaped to age gracefully absorbing change while remaining steady, adaptable, and connected to its land.
